What Can You Do with Your Pumpkin After Halloween?
Every year millions of pumpkins go to landfill after Halloween celebrations, so here’s some ideas to save yours!
However, you choose to use your pumpkin, please do not bring them to the forest! Many animals including hedgehogs can become seriously ill and even die from eating pumpkin. Autumn is one of the best seasons for woodland animals to source their food so they don’t need our help providing food at this time of year.
Our animals on the farm will be given small amounts of pumpkin (where suitable) as a treat at this time of year, we cannot accept donations of pumpkins as the animals can only have the small amounts that we provide.
Compost it
Pumpkins can be placed in a compost bin/heap and will decompose over time, cutting it into smaller pieces will speed up the process. Remove the seeds or you may have pumpkin plants growing!
Eat it!
All pumpkins (even the ‘carving’ ones) are edible, although the smaller ones tend to have more flavour. You can eat every part of a pumpkin except the stalk so why not have a look at the options below
#EatYourPumpkin is a campaign run buy Hubbub, an environmental charity whose research shows that 56% of pumpkins purchased for carving are never eaten, that’s 22.2million pumpkins worth an estimated £32million!
They have lots of ideas of how to use your pumpkin this year, with decorating ideas and lots of recipes from one-pot-pasta to pumpkin and coconut bread. Save your pumpkin this year and use it to create some delicious food.
